HISTORY (Unofficial 2001-2006)
Troop 16 was originally chartered in 1929 and was a continuous chartered Troop
until 1998. In most years the Knights of Columbus were the Chartering
Organization for the Troop. In reviewing some of the Troop's records at the NWSC
offices, records going back to 1929, I found that some Village streets are named
after some early Troop members.
There was break in chartering from January 1998 to December 2001. The Troop was
chartered in December 2001 but, it actually did not start meeting again until
March 2002 when the Pack 191 Webelos crossed over into the Troop. Our first
group of Webelos crossed over in March 2002. Ben, Matt, Scott, Tim & Jack. Frank
and Matt did not initially cross-over into T-16. The Troop rechartered with 7
Scouts (the above 5, plus Matt and Frankie ). The Troop's fist event was the BH
District Spring camporee in Janesville WI, in April 2002
The Troop has gone to Napowan each summer since 2002. Troop 16 sent 3
representatives to the 2005 National BSA Jamboree @ Ft. A.P. Hill in Virginia.
To my knowledge this is the first time any Scout or Leader represented T-16 or
Schiller Park @ a National Jamboree.
T-16 participated in its first BH District Klondike Derby in January 2003 and
took first place in that District event for two consecutive years in 2004 and
2005.
T-16 was recognized in 2004 and 2005 as one of the Top Troops in BH District.
Scoutmaster, Keith Granum received the Golden Tomahawk each of these years as
the Top Scoutmaster in the BH District. The Troop's top leadership is trained,
including the Scoutmaster and 2 of 3 ASM's plus, several Committee members
including the Committee Chairman. One leader is Wood Badge Trained and 2 leaders
and 2 scouts have been OKPIK (cold weather camping) trained.
Troop 16 has been a Quality Unit since 2003.
Troop 16 conducts several community service projects each year including a Fall
Food Drive, a Village Flag Retirement ceremony and participates in the knights
of Columbus Tootsie Roll fundraiser each year. Scouts from T-16 also work
cooperatively with the Des Plaines Valley Restoration Group periodically helping
to eradicate non-native species (Buck Thorn) from the Schiller Woods Forest
Preserve.
The Troop supports itself by participating in the NWSC fundraisers including
Popcorn & Wreath Sales plus, Car Washes, Spaghetti Dinners, Pancake Breakfasts.
The Troop also gets support from the Village of SP through the Village's Youth
Grant and from the Chicago-O'Hare Rotary Club, operating in Schiller Park.
